U.S. Justice Department Concludes Investigation
The U.S. Department of Justice has notified the Key West Police Department that it has concluded its investigation into the in-custody death of Charles Eimers and has found no criminal wrongdoing.
“After careful consideration,” wrote Paige M. Fitzgerald, the Acting Section Chief of the Criminal Section, “we conclude that the evidence does not establish a prosecutable violation of the federal criminal civil rights statutes. Accordingly, we have closed our investigation.”
The Key West Citizens Review Committee requested the investigation in January of 2015 regarding the December 4, 2013 death of Charles Eimers. Eimers fled a traffic stop, drove erratically across town, ran his car up on a beach and later stopped breathing after he was in custody.
Investigations by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and a Grand Jury convened by the Monroe County State Attorney’s Office have also concluded no criminal wrongdoing in the case.
