Acclaimed “Mothers And Sons” Ends Run This Week
Only a few performances remain of “Mothers and Sons,” playing until Saturday, February 13th at the Waterfront Playhouse. This Tony-nominated play by Terrence McNally has been called “the most emotionally resonant play you will see all season in Key West.”
Beautifully directed by Murphy Davis and starring an outstanding cast of actors, “Mothers and Sons” has deeply touched audiences with its brilliant mix of comedy and drama. Diane Johnson said in KONK Life, ”An intelligent and heartfelt rendering, “Mothers and Sons” is an exquisite portrayal of the progress the gay community has achieved despite the horrors of the AIDS epidemic.”
Social media has seen an outpouring of glowing comments such as: “One of the best theatrical performances I’ve ever seen in Key West — maybe anywhere!”; “What a beautifully done piece with wonderful writing, acting, sets, you name it!”; “Great show. Powerful, thought provoking and funny”; “Great cast, great direction, great production” and “What a wonderful evening of theatre!”
“Mothers and Sons” is about a mother who pays a surprise visit to the New York apartment of her late son’s ex-partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, she is able to see the rich life her son might have led. The play ends on a hopeful note, as the mother is led by the young son to discover the healing power of forgiveness – for others and for one’s self.
The actors have received universal accolades. Joy Hawkins plays the mother. She’s the Artistic Director of the Red Barn Theater, where she’s directed and acted in many productions. At the Waterfront she has wowed audiences with her performances in “Doubt,” “The Glass Menagerie,” and “August: Osage County.”
Matt McGrath just received rave reviews for the Off Broadway productions of “Steve” and “The Legend of Georgia McBride.” On Broadway, he has appeared “Working,” “A Streetcar Named Desire” and as the Emcee in “Cabaret.” He has a recurring role on “Modern Family.”
Trey Gerrald appeared at the Waterfront last season in “Next Fall.” He is a series regular on “The Queens Project” and has had guest appearances in popular series such as “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “You’re the Worst,” “Next Caller” and “Deadbeat.”
Making his professional stage debut is Jake Ferguson as Bud Ogden-Porter. A native Key Wester, Jake has appeared in Camp Bravo’s “The Aristocats” at the Waterfront.
Director Murphy Davis is the former Artistic Director of the Bay Street Theater and recently directed “Casa Valentina” and last year’s “Next Fall” at the Waterfront.
Michael Boyer’s set of a Manhattan apartment has received his usual high marks. Carmen Rodriguez designed the costumes. Dennis Blake created the lighting. Peggy Montgomery is the stage manager.
All performances are at 8 PM and the production is sponsored by Key TV.
