A Celebration of the Life of Key West artist Sal Salinero (1941 – 2015)

Internationally-renowned and winner of numerous awards, Key West artist Sal Salinero was considered an “island treasure.”

Sal saturated his work with the same riveting colors that defined his life – as a child in Key West and as an adult in the rainforests of Central America. That colorful life ended peacefully when Salinero, soldier, artist, gallery owner and fourth-generation Conch, surrendered to a decade-long illness on August 11, 2015. Sal’s iconic work was the first exhibition at the gallery’s inaugural show in 1974. His fascination with the rainforest began in 1964, when he was stationed in Panama as an Army Green Beret. Salinero, whose family has been in Key West for 150 years, endured months at a time in the Darien Jungle learning survival training. But the soldier had an artist’s soul, and Salinero turned some of the toughest trials of his life into a celebration of color and life.

The inspiration for great art, it is said, comes from the heart. For Sal Salinero, the inspiration came from the soul. In painting these magnificent rainforest landscapes, Salinero captured not only the physical beauty, but also the spiritual sense of perfection in nature. Key West has lost one of its Hall of Fame painters and a true island icon.

As co-owner with husband Jeff Birn, they owned and operated Gingerbread Square Gallery.

All are invited to attend “A Celebration of the Life of Key West artist Sal Salinero” which will be held in the courtyard at Gingerbread Square Gallery, Monday evening, December 28th from 5 – 7:30PM.
