FKCC Graduates Fall Class of 2015
Florida Keys Community College held its third fall semester commencement ceremony on Friday at the San Carlos Institute. Twenty-nine students received their diplomas—a milestone moment culminating years of hard work, challenges, and achievements.
The intimate ceremony was a family affair which was reflected in College President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra’s “charge” to the graduates. He shared individual stories of life trials and triumph within the class and commended the graduates on their accomplishments.
FKCC Distinguished Alumnus and President of Historic Tours of America, Edwin Swift III, delivered the Keynote Address. Swift, who was part of the College’s first class in 1965, spoke of the life-changing opportunities that the College has provided over the past 50 years—particularly for those, like he, who could not leave the Keys to pursue a college education.
Graduate Heather Kenyon, who was selected by her classmate to give the Student Address, reflected on the various hands-on experiences she and her classmates had at FKCC. “At FKCC we didn’t listen to boring lectures, we had classroom discussions. We didn’t sit in the same classroom semester after semester, we went diving to collect data in order to analyze the health of our coral reefs. We cared for an infant after helping a new mother give birth. We learned the fundamentals to opening our own business. We became an accomplished dive master or we laid the foundation to a four-year degree.”
After receiving their diplomas, the graduates were presented with FKCC alumni pins—officially marking their new relationship with the College.
FKCC’s spring semester begins January 8. Information about academic programs, including course schedules and ways to pay for college, can be viewed at www.fkcc.edu.
