Fringe Opener Sass In The Parlor

Fringe Theater’s exciting FIFTH ANNIVERSARY Season opens with the sassy works of Alice’s Parlor II.  Four remarkable one-act plays by Alice Gerstenberg tell the tales of human foibles in the early 1920’s. Written for a drawing room, the plays are presented in the civil war-era parlor of the historic Rectory at St Paul’s church at 401 Duval from December 2 – 12.  The plays are human and humorous, and the Fringe is proud to introduce many new talents and welcome back local luminaries in the cast.

The  plays are The Unseen, directed by Steve Kitsakos, where an unruly maid brings the family fortunes to despair. Can her  “sixth sense” save them? Rosi Ware returns this year as the disruptive maid who antagonizes architect Jeffrey Baldwin, played by newcomer Neal Ruchman, and his struggling-to-keep-up-appearances wife newcomer Diane Shelby.

Using their hypocrisy against them, the society women playing hearts in the play titled Hearts, directed by Judy Hadley, are challenged on whether or not they actually have “heart” when their idle gossip could ruin a kindly doctor’s career. Starring Kitty Clements, Deborah Snelgrove, Jeanne Tindel and Donna Stabile.

Seaweed, directed by Karen Leonard stars local favorite Melody Moore and newcomers Susan Butler and Melissa Hyatt joining Sarah Goodwin as four beauties at the beach.  They take stock of their lives and loves as they weigh up their choices on traditional marriage versus making more of their lives – and making waves.

Their Husband, directed by Alicia Merel, offers a thoroughly modern perspective of three spirited women loving, marrying, and divorcing. Newcomer Monique Griffin joins Janeen Gracer, Joanie Sullivan and Diane May as the women turn to a wily fortune teller to untangle the knots of past relationships – but is her advice inspired by psychic skills or hocus-pocus?

The role of Alice is played by Alicia Merel. Introductory scenes are by playwright Monnie King.
