Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Florida Keys Aqueduct (FKAA) and Monroe County agreed to settle the last remaining lawsuitEarlier today, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Florida Keys Aqueduct (FKAA) and Monroe County agreed to settle the last remaining lawsuit regarding the Cudjoe Regional Wastewater System with Cudjoe Gardens Property Owners Association, Inc. and Sugarloaf Shores Property Owners Association, Inc.
The DEP operating permit issued in 2009 for the treatment plant allows shallow well injections, and calls for FKAA to do regular testing to assure water quality is protected. The Settlement Agreement provides that until the deep well is complete the plant will be limited to 50% of its capacity. The FKAA at its Board Meeting today awarded the contract to begin the deep well construction. Construction is anticipated to be complete next fall.
“The DEP’s letter last week to start the operation of the treatment plant was a significant step. It allows the County and FKAA to continue to improve the environment and protect the nearshore waters in the lower keys by taking over 8,000 cesspits and septic tanks and, in addition, numerous package plants, out of commission and replacing them with effluent treated for the first time to Florida Advanced Wastewater Treatment Standards”, said Kirk Zuelch, FKAA Executive Director.
“Monroe County and Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority believe the Settlement Agreement approved today is the culmination of efforts by all parties to ensure that we as a community preserve and protect our environment into the future,” said Roman Gastesi, Monroe County Administrator
