Another Duval St. Cosmetic Shop Rip Off?
A couple of seniors from Dustin, Florida have filed complaints with the city’s code enforcement office and the State Attorney’s office that they were ripped off for $3010 by the Oro Gold 1 cosmetics shop at 518 Duval Street.
The couple, Lee Stevens, 75 and his partner Cynthia Johnson, 62 claim the shop made an unauthorized credit card charge without their knowledge.
Lee Johnson claims “this business cheated us and was very clever in doing so. It’s hard to imagine that we are the first visitors to Key West to be taken advantage of by this business. We hate to think about how many other good people this business has cheated and if not stopped, how many people they will cheat in the future”.
Bruce Mitchell, a spokesperson for The Key West Rip Off Rapid Response Team called the most recent charge against a Duval Street cosmetic shop “Very, very disappointing and sad. To see more visitors, especially seniors getting ripped off by a few businesses makes us sick. There seems to be a pattern of tourists being ripped off here. It reflects very poorly on Key West and it needs to stop.”

The City of Key West has limited the number of tattoo shops on Duval using the veiled excuse that they attract the “wrong element.” How is it possible that an unlimited number of cosmetic shops and stripper clubs can repeatedly do this over and over without any intervention? At this point, it is clear that someone high up at City Hall is either being paid off or threatened to keep these people in business so the solution will need to come on a Federal level. On a sidebar, if I were to receive anywhere near the number of complaints that these places generated with my own credit card processor, then my account would be dropped immediately.
