LETTER TO THE EDITOR

It never ceases to amaze me that people call self-driving cars progress.  I suppose that those who are too busy texting and using their gadgets while driving would prefer relegating driving functions to robotic functions what are creeping in at an alarming speed.

Under the guise of safety and concern for the common good, we appear more than eager to relinquish our God given freedom and judgment to guide ourselves through life.  Control freaks behind the scenes are obviously more than eager to accommodate our laissez-faire and devil may care attitudes.  The incremental introduction of more and more autonomous functions in our vehicles is akin to the frog that doesn’t realize that the water in the pot is getting too hot until it get boiled.

It is not wonder that older cars, especially ones without a computer, are getting more and more expensive and harder to find.  Those who truly cherish freedom and are leery of dubious progress refuse to get snared into a collective net that resembles more to long line fishing than a safety net.

Though many refuse to become mere guppies in a fish farm, few can afford prices of heretofore cheap “people’s cars – Volkswagen.”  If you haven’t bothered checking, look up what the latest auctions are fetching for VW Hippie busses…
