Key West Poet Laureate Rosalind Brackenbury to give reading at Harrison Gallery

 

Poetry fans have something extra special to look forward to this coming Walk on White. Key West’s newly appointed Poet Laureate Rosalind Brackenbury will present a reading and book signing this Thursday, April 16th at Harrison Gallery from 6-8 pm. Brackenbury will read select poems from BONNARD’S DOG, her latest book published by Hanging Loose Press.

 

 

“I’m incredibly honored to be chosen as Key West’s Poet Laureate – in the city of Elizabeth Bishop, Tennessee Williams, James Merrill and Richard Wilbur,” says Brackenbury.  “How lucky that it coincides with the publication of my new collection, BONNARD’S DOG and its launch at Helen Harrison’s beautiful gallery next Thursday.”

 

 

Brackenbury—a native of England who divides her time between Key West and Paris— is the author of twelve novels, two books of short stories and eight books of poems.  “Bonnard’s Dog” portrays nearly fifty new poems set in Key West and France that reveal Brackenbury’s deft mastery of language and attendance to the details of our human existence and –with a lyrical precision that Brackenbury does so well—the murmurings of it that flow just under the surface.

 

“We are creatures of the breathing world,/ sucked this way and that,/pulled on by tides; emptied, filled,/ all our days and nights,/ this quiet in-out, nothing ever/stopped or still,” she writes in “Breath,”  a poem that quietly investigates life (and death) with economy, precision and power.

 

Harvey Shapiro, former poet and New York Times editor praised Brackenbury’s poetry as “a palpable pleasure on the tongue.”

 

The event coincides with National Poetry Month, the country’s largest literary celebration of poetry with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers and poets that affirms poetry’s vital place in our culture.  The evening will also feature the work of Vera Vasek, a visual artist who explores the character and beauty of intertidal zones.
