Sheriff’s Animal Farm

By Morgan Kidwell

Did you know that there is a sloth living in Key West?

It lives at the Sheriff’s Animal Farm!

I had never seen one before! I recently got to visit the farm with Farmer Jeanne Selander.

It was so much fun! There are all kinds of cool animals that live there.

There are alpacas, pigs, goats, cavies, horses, turtles, peacocks, snakes, an emu, a skunk, a bull, turkeys, donkey, bunnies, ferrets and lots of birds including a new toucan. They also recently got a chameleon and when I looked in the cage, I could barely find it. Farmer Jeanne got the emu when it was just four days old and has raised it at the farm.

The skunk is so cute and likes for Farmer Jeanne to hold it! I didn’t know you could hold a skunk like that.

When I was there, the peacock opened up its feathers and it was so beautiful.

The Animal Farm has been open for 20 years. All of the animals living at the animal farm are either abandoned or donated.

When the animals get there, Jeanne has to sometimes build new homes for them.

Farmer Jeanne knows so much about all the animals. If you have questions, you can ask her.

The Animal Farm is open the second and fourth Sunday every month from 1 to 3 p.m.

You will want to go when it first opens because there is so much to see and you can spend the whole time there! The farm is located at the Sheriff’s Office at 5501 College Road.

The farm is run on donations so if you want to donate, you can send money to Farmer Jeanne, MCSO Animal Farm, 5501 College Road, Key West, FL 33040.
