Coming to a classroom near you: Fringe’s Shakespeare in School
For the third year, the Fringe Theater of Key West is presenting its Shakespeare in School program, coming to a classroom near you in May. This two-day learning opportunity, with classroom lessons on the first day and a riveting live theater performance by Fringe’s Shakespeare acting troupe on the second, helped open the minds of over 900 local students to the wonderful world of theater in 2013.
This year, students at Sigsbee Charter School, Marathon Middle High School, and Key West High School will enjoy the magic of the stage and the Bard through this educational and entertaining program, funded by the Fringe and its donors, Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the Key West Woman’s Club and the Dogwood Foundation.
This year’s program includes scenes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, and The Taming of the Shrew, presented by outstanding local actors Bob Bowersox, Wayne Dapser, Melody Moore, Ross Pipkin and Tammy Shanley. Judy Hadley and Tammy Shanley lend their talents as producer and director and Alicia Merel manages the productions.
Fringe is proud to help instill in the next generation the community’s appreciation for the arts. As Fringe Producing Artistic Director Monnie King said, “The Fringe’s mission includes using theater arts to educate; Shakespeare in School is one of our favorite methods for accomplishing this mission. Often, these productions are the first live theater the kids have ever seen, and they’re riveted, engaged.”
Fringe Theater of Key West is a nonprofit that creates, educates, and entertains with classic, innovative, intimate theater through programs such as Shakespeare in School, Fringe Benefits: Classic Short Plays and main stage productions. Supporters include the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, the Dogwood Foundation, Keys Energy and private donors.
